Darwin Nunez sets unwanted new Premier League record in Liverpool’s thrashing of Chelsea

Darwin Nunez failed to score in Liverpool’s 4-1 win at home to Chelsea on Wednesday, yet the striker still managed to break a Premier League – albeit an unwanted one

Liverpool 4-1 Chelsea: Andy Dunn’s verdict

Darwin Nunez broke a Premier League record against Chelsea – but it’s one which he won’t be proud of.

The Liverpool striker was thoroughly involved in his team’s comfortable 4-1 victory at home to Chelsea on Wednesday, as the Reds re-established their five-point lead at the top of the table. Sadly for Nunez, though, he didn’t get on the scoresheet and came out of the match boasting an unwanted record.

Jurgen Klopp’s £64million signing hit the woodwork four times in the match, the most ever by a single player since Premier League records began, dating back to the 2003-04 season. One of those was a missed penalty in the first half with the scoreline reading 2-0 and Chelsea looking increasingly vulnerable.

But Blues goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic didn’t need to intervene, as Nunez slammed the right-hand post. The 24-year-old Uruguayan had been denied by Petrovic a few minutes earlier, as the Serbian shot-stopper tipped his effort onto the frame of the goal.

After two more missed chances, Nunez managed to earn an assist for Luis Diaz as Liverpool wrapped up their crucial win, while title rivals Arsenal and Manchester City also won their midweek fixtures. Despite the Reds’ lead at the top, there’s serious pressure on Nunez to up his game, having failed to eradicate his scattergun finishing since his patchy debut season at Anfield.

Former Liverpool striker Robbie Fowler knows a thing or two about being clinical and told TNT Sports after the Chelsea thrashing: “There comes a point when you can’t be classed as a raw player. I think Nunez will score goals and will be a handful but I think there comes a point where he will need to be more clinical.”

However, Reds manager Klopp commended Nunez on his work-rate, adding post-match: “You could see at half time he was really upset with himself after missing the penalty, then the header, but he stayed in the game.”

The ex-Benfica hotshot will be hoping that Klopp starts him in Sunday’s crucial game away to Arsenal, although the Liverpool boss admits that he doesn’t yet know his line-up. “The next game is in four days and I have no idea who is going to play,” Klopp confessed. “They are knackered in the dressing room.”
